Shot Blasting Explained & Why Surface Preparation is Important

Shot blasting is one of those processes that does not always get the attention it deserves. It happens before the visible finishing work begins, which means it is easy to overlook. Without it, even the best paint or coating will fail prematurely. Understanding what shot blasting involves and why surface preparation matters is important for anyone specifying or procuring metal fabrications. Shot blasting is a mechanical surface preparation process that uses high-velocity abrasive media, typically steel shot or grit, propelled at a metal surface to remove rust, mill scale, old coatings and other contaminants. The result is a clean, profiled surface that is ready to accept paint, powder coating or other protective treatments.

The process is measured against industry standards, with SA 2½ being the most widely specified level of cleanliness for industrial applications. This standard indicates a near-white metal finish, free from visible oil, grease, dirt, mill scale and rust, with only faint traces of discolouration remaining. For most industrial painting and coating applications, SA 2½ is the minimum requirement.

The performance of any coating is only as good as the surface it is applied to. Contaminants left on a metal surface before painting create weak points where corrosion can take hold, causing coatings to blister, flake and fail long before they should. Proper shot blasting removes these risks by creating a clean, consistent surface with the right profile for the coating to bond to.

In demanding industrial environments, where fabrications may be exposed to moisture, chemicals, temperature extremes or heavy mechanical stress, this matters enormously. A poorly prepared surface can compromise the structural integrity and lifespan of a fabrication, regardless of how well the rest of the manufacturing process has been managed.

Capacity matters. A facility that can only handle small components will create bottlenecks on larger projects. At Hassell’s, our shot blasting facility accommodates items up to five metres cubed with a lifting capacity of up to five tonnes, covering the full range from individual components to large structural fabrications.
